The US Army soldiers working on a tire car and digging up the playground to place tires into a U shaped reading / storytime bench

Make A Difference Day Brings The Army to Keiki O Ka Aina

For Make A Difference Day The US Army Unit A-1 Company, 1st Battalion of the 21st Infantry chose to help Keiki O Ka Aina's Family Learning Centers build a tire playground at their Kalihi Baptist Church preschool site.

Using old tires that were donated by Lex Brodie of Kalihi, Discount Tire and others, the soldiers arrived early in the morning to begin working on the landscaping and used the old tires to add to the the existing playground.

KHON Channel 2 News and Trini Kaopuiki were on hand with a Live morning telecast and interviewed Keiki O Ka Aina's Kanoe Naone, Momi Durand, and others from the Army unit. The Make A Difference event coincided with a Keiki O Ka Aina's staff development meeting at the same location and gave the chance for Keiki O Ka Aina to extend their gratitide to the soldiers by gathering together to sing Oli Mahalo and extend warm hugs and appreciation.

With help from the Pettus Foundation, the soldiers built a lo'i into the corner of the playground, a U shaped reading-storytime bench, a garden for growing native plants, a tire swing, an obstacle course, a stair stepping wall against the wall of the preschool, and an extremely cool tire car.

Many Mahalos to all the soldiers for their hard work and to all the Keiki O Ka Aina staff and employees who helped. A big shout out goes to the companies that donated the tires, Kalihi Baptist Church, KHON2 News, and the Honolulu Advertiser - Mahalo Nui Loa!
