These stories
incorporate myths, history, oral tradition and popular culture to bring the subject of vegetables alive. Food does not exist in a vacuum: Our attitudes toward it are shaped by childhood experiences, ethnic heritage and family traditions. The Vegetable Storybook introduces children to foods they may not be eating regularly. In the interest of the continuing health of the nation’s children, some food attitudes need to be adjusted to incorporate more healthful foods into the diet.

"The Vegetable Storybook published by Keiki O Ka Aina Press and coauthored by our director of early childhood programs, Vicki Draeger, and Gail Bellamy has earned Best Cookbook Illustrations, U.S. honors in the 2010 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. The book is illustrated by syndicated cartoonist Jenny Campbell. Food and wine book winners from 154 countries in 53 competition categories will progress to the next level of the competition to represent their country and compete against same-category winners from other countries. Best in the World winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held in Paris, France on March 3, 2011 at the Paris Cookbook Fair."
